Catherine Sargeant

Catherine Sargeant is a visual artist based in Edinburgh who uses text in her artworks. Graduating from Edinburgh College of Art during its centenary year she became the first recipient of WASPS new graduate award. Along with her art practice Catherine teaches various art classes and is a professional member of the Society of Scottish Artists. She finds that words have an inherent beauty and is fascinated by the way we are saturated with text and communication in every aspect of our lives. Catherine aims to take this and create works which simultaneously calm and question the viewer. She works in series using a variety of scales and surfaces. The text or words used are collected from many sources, from Burns poetry to dictionary definitions, random found text to collaborations with contemporary poets.
