Pauline Prior-Pitt

Pauline Prior-Pitt has lived on the Isle of North Uist for 21 years. She has published nine collections of poems. Be an Angel contains a selection of her poems about women, while the poems in Storm Biscuits are about North Uist. Her most recent collection, Written on the Shore, combines the themes of women and the sea. She has also published four handmade, handstitched pamphlets. North Uist Sea Poems won the 2006 Callum Macdonald Award. Pauline’s readings are very popular at festivals in England and Scotland, and she has appeared several times on Radio 3 and Radio 4’s poetry programmes. Pauline is the founder of ‘Last Thursdays’, a monthly poetry evening at Taigh Chearsabhagh Arts Centre, where she also runs monthly writing workshops.

by mistake I took
your hat instead of mine

the same black one
we both have
with a peak and ear flaps

even adjusting the strap
as far as it will go

it keeps on
slipping over my eyes

shutting out the sky
the horizon
the waves

all I can see is one boot
following the other
sinking into the sand

but I keep on wearing it
your hat   in this incessant rain
