New poems attempting the impossible

One of the joys of translation is the challenge of wrestling with words, phrases, expressions and concepts which resist efforts to transport them from one language to another. To embrace and celebrate the diverse is to recognise that sometimes language remains defiant. As part of this year’s On the Road theme, in which we explore how not only poets but also languages travel, we have commissioned poets to attempt the impossible by writing poems which engage with foreign words generally considered untranslatable.
