A digital installation of commissioned poems on Cypriot artefacts from the Bridges Collection

A collection of Cypriot artefacts donated to the University of St Andrews now forms an important part of their archaeology collection. The material donated by Margaret Bridges was accumulated by the Bridges family during the 1960s, when Margaret’s husband was employed by the British Council in Cyprus. The artefacts range in date from the Bronze Age to the Byzantine period and include pottery vessels, lamps, figurines and votive offerings as well as some bronze and glass objects, such as lamp stands and beads. Together the artefacts provide fascinating glimpses into the ancient world – from trade, technology and consumption to burial, beliefs and artistic expression. These objects resound with personal connections to the people who made and used them, be this through the beauty of a small utilitarian spindle whorl or the thumbprint of a potter on a perfume bottle. StAnza has commissioned poets to respond to several of these artefacts, and a digital installation of images of the artefacts and the resulting poems will be exhibited during the festival.
