Poetry on the Road: Rebecca Sharp and Bas Kwakman

Thursday 2 March, 19:00 - 19:40
The Byre Theatre, Abbey Street - Conference Room
FREE

A poet and a festival director share their experiences of taking part in an overseas festival

Poetry travels across cultures by way of translators – but also by way of festivals and the opportunities they offer for exchange, collaboration and inspiration. While poets from countries as far flung as Australia, the USA and Iceland travel to StAnza, the Scottish poet Rebecca Sharp and Bas Kwakman, who is an artist and also Director of Rotterdam's Poetry International Festival and the global Poetry International Web, will both be journeying back from Nicaragua's International Poetry Festival. For Rebecca this will be a new experience, for Bas a familiar one. Bas's memoir about his travels for poetry, Hotelkamerverhalen, illustrated by his own drawings of the hotel rooms he has stayed in along the way, will be published later this year, and selected images will feature in a digital installation at the festival. Join them as they discuss their experiences, the challenges and opportunities travel offers poets and those working in poetry, and what poetry gains from such international engagement.
