Past & Present

Saturday 9 March, 11:30 - 12:30
Town Hall, Queens Gardens - Council Chamber

Jacqueline Saphra on Edna St Vincent Millay; Caroline Bird on James Tate

Our Past & Present sessions offer contemporary speakers and poets a chance to share their enthusiasm for favourite past poets. This Saturday afternoon, two writers discuss two Pulitzer-winning poets prominent in the sphere of American poetry, both of whom write across genres. Jacqueline Saphra will be discussing Edna St Vincent Millay, an exceptional poet who used her rich and emotionally vulnerable work to shine light on the controversial issues of social equality and welfare. Also speaking will be Caroline Bird, who will be sharing her interest in James Tate, a prolific writer known as much for his prose as his poetry – his graceful and yet surreal tone and style captured audiences as his works danced around subjects of place and identity.
