Past & Present

Saturday 10 March, 14:15 - 15:15
The Town Hall, Queens Gardens - Council Chamber

W.N. Herbert on W.S. Graham; Oli Hazzard on John Ashbery

In our Past & Present sessions, contemporary speakers give a personal response to favourite past poets writing in English or other languages. In this session, W.N. Herbert and Oli Hazzard discuss two major poets from the past hundred years. W.N. Herbert will focus on W.S. Graham, a Scottish poet whose work explored the possibilities of language and structure. Oli Hazzard, meanwhile, will talk about John Ashbery, who died in 2017 and who was known for the complexity and postmodern characteristics of his poetry.

Presented in association with the W.S. Graham Centenary project and supported by the School of English at the University of St Andrews and the National Lottery through Creative Scotland.
