Nordic Language Focus

Nordic Language Focus

Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Icelandic and Swedish (including Finland-Swedish) are all official national languages of Nordic countries, and along with Faroese, Greenlandic and Sámi, they’re the languages that the Nordic cultures are based on. From across the northern seas which link us, we are delighted to welcome to StAnza 2020 from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden speaking Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish and Sámi to take part in a range of readings, performances and other events. Poets from Norway and Scotland will work together in a collaborative translation workshop preparing new poems to be shared at the festival; filmpoems from Sweden will be included in this year’s film programme; and poems by other Nordic poets will feature in installations around the festival.

“we came sailing in
thin, handsewn boats back in those days, laden heavy with the stories of our
grandmothers”

Johan E.M. Sandberg McGuinne
