La Nouvelle Alliance

Aurélia Lassaque by Evelyn Flores

The Auld Alliance was the Scots name for the periodic alliance between the kingdom of France with Scotland before the Union of the Crowns in 1603, known in France as Vieille Alliance. For the preceding three centuries the alliance played a significant role in the history of Scotland, and significantly influenced Scottish culture. French was for a time the language of the Scottish court, and Mary Queen of Scots wrote poetry in French.

We have given the title of La Nouvelle Alliance for our translated language focus on French poetry for 2017. French-language poets will be featured at the festival and we shall also engage with France and all things French in a range of other events.
