Beyond the Atlas

Wednesday 1 March, 14:00 - 16:30
MUSA (Museum of the University of St Andrews), The Scores

A half-day workshop at MUSA with Valerie Gillies

StAnza’s themes for 2017 of The Heights of Poetry and On the Road come together in the life and work of the celebrated Scottish writer, photographer, mountaineer and walker, Hamish Brown. The University of St Andrews have a collection of his photography and artefacts from his travels amongst the Berber people of the Atlas Mountains. Valerie Gillies will take as her starting point a selection of artefacts from his travels for this creative writing workshop. Writers will explore new sources of inspiration, using an artefact or photographic image to nourish the imagination, and to glimpse worlds far removed in time and place from our own. We will focus on whatever we find compelling. Our writing will take a new direction as we discover who and what exists 'beyond the atlas'.

In partnership with MUSA (Museum of the University of St Andrews). Supported by EventScotland and part of Scotland’s Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology 2017

Participants: Valerie Gillies
